ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the effect of work environment perception and type of neuroticism

personality on employee work stress at PT PLN (Persero) in North Sumatra, especially in Nias

regency. The research data was obtained through the scale of perception of the work environment,

the scale of the personality type of neuroticism and the work stress scale. The research subjects

were PLN employees in North Sumatra who worked in Nias regency. The number of subjects is 75

people (N = 75) which consists of starting from staff positions to the manager. The collected data is

then processed with ANOVA multiple regression analysis. Based on the major hypothesis

concluded that 68% of the work stress variance experienced by employees of PT PLN (Persero)

North Sumatra region for Nias area was influenced by the perception of the work environment and

the type of neuroticism personality.

Keywords: Perception of Work Environment, Neuroticism Personality Type, Work Stress

Introduction

PT. PLN (Persero) in Nias is divided into two regions, Gunung Sitoli and Teluk Dalam. Each

region has its own PLTD (Diesel Power Plant) unit. Nias Regency consists of approximately 75

employees. The average staff is under 30 years old, freshgraduated, with an average diploma and

strata education. Recruitment was carried out in Jakarta and after being received the new

employees joined OJT (On the Job Training), Pre-service positions, and obtained a placement

decision. Employees in Nias regency get the biggest allowance compared to other regions. With the

existing conditions, employees in Nias regency wanted to leave and move from Nias regency.

From the results of pre-eliminary research conducted in Nias regency, it turned out that from the

questionnaire data, 65% of employees experienced work stress, 10% of employees experienced

decreased work motivation, 8% of employees had a heavy workload, 5% had problems with

leadership, and 12 % of employees have problems with their work environment.

If employees experience work stress, it will hamper the company's performance. Likewise,

employee perceptions of a poor work environment can make employee productivity decrease

(Sunarto, 2004). Job stress or tension arises as a result of an imbalance between individual

perceptions of work demands faced by individual perceptions of their ability to cope with these

demands (Rice, 1992). Job stress is also related to the environmental situation that is perceived as a

pressure that exceeds the ability and state of one's self to overcome it (Mc. Grath in Candraiah,

2003). In addition to the perception of the work environment, work stress is also strongly

influenced by the type of personality (Robbins, 2014). Personality type that is easy to worry,

anxious, emotional, feeling uncomfortable, lack of adjustment and sadness that has no reason is a

characteristic type of personality neuroticism (Pervin, 2005).

Statement of the problem

What is the effect of the influence of work environment perceptions and the type of neuroticism

personality on the work stress of PT PLN employees in North Sumatra?

Hypothesis

There is a positive influence between the perception of the work environment and personality type

of neuroticism on work stress.

obtained by using self report cards in the form of research subjects' personal data fields and scale.

subsequent data processing, processed using the help of a computer program SPSS for Windows
