Usage of Library Services and Facilities

of Bangalore University Law College

Library: A Case Study

Abstract

Libraries are the center of learning and service oriented social institution, and it is expected to

perform certain functions. It should provide Lifelong self-education, preservation of literary

heritage, proper use of leisure, information /documents on all subjects including local, national

and international affairs. Academic libraries are considered to be the nerve center of academic

institutions, and must support teaching, research, and other academic program.

1. Introduction

Libraries are the center of learning and

service oriented social institution, and it is

expected to perform certain functions. It

should provide Lifelong self-education,

preservation of literary heritage, proper use

of leisure, information /documents on all

subjects including local, national and

international affairs. Academic libraries are

considered to be the nerve center of

academic institutions, and must support

teaching, research, and other academic

program. The main function of Academic

library can be stated as the Conservation of

Knowledge resources, Preservation,

Dissemination, resource sharing, resource

services, self-learning.

1.1About the University Law College

The Government Law College, Bangalore

was established by the erstwhile

Government of Mysore on July 1, 1948. The

Government Law College was transferred to

Bangalore University and since then the

college is known as University Law College,

Bangalore as a constituent college by an

order dated. 19.6.1976. The University Law

College, Bangalore has been offering 5 Year

LL.B integrated program since the year

1986-87. The Master Degree Program in

Law was started in the year 1960-61 as M.L.

Degree course. After becoming part of the

Bangalore University in 1976, the P.G.

Department of Law has been offering LL.M

program me in 5 different branches. The

LL.M program in Business Law, Labor,

Capital and Law, Environment and Legal

Order, Criminal law and Constitution and

Legal order have been a great success. Our

Alumni are placed in different positions of

life like judges, leading lawyers,

 Reference service

 Inter library loan

 Book renewal

 New arrival display

1.4 NEED AND PURPOSE OF THE

STUDY

While many Studies have been done on the

Libraries of Law colleges. In view of the

gap that exists in the literature on this

subject, the present study proposes to focus

its thrust manly on “usage of Library

Facilities and Services of Bangalore

University Law College Library: Bangalore.

These libraries provide important services to

the students and faculty, therefore this work

has been selected to study the Bangalore

University Law College Library. Their use

and services and Facilities of the Students

and Faculties.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study mainly distributed of

questionnaire for the users of University

Law College Library, Bangalore University.

1.7 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To find out the frequency of visit to

the library among users.

2. To Know the Information resources,

Facilities available and services

provided by the Bangalore

University Law College Library.

3. To Understand Information

requirement of Library Users.

1.8 HYPOTHESES

1. There is Signification

difference in the use pattern

of Library Facilities and

Services among Students,

Research Scholars and

Faculty members.

2. There is significant

difference in the preferences

of information resources

among the respondents of

various categories.

1.9 METHODOLOGY

The present study made use of survey

method using Questionnaire. Purpose of the

study, primary data, secondary data and

information was collected from the library

collection and services. A structured

questionnaire seeking information on library

resources, services, collections, the role

played by the library, etc., was designed and

distributed among users of Bangalore
