Usage of Library Services and Facilities

of Bangalore University Law College

Library: A Case Study

Abstract

Libraries are the center of learning and service oriented social institution, and it is expected to

perform certain functions. It should provide Lifelong self-education, preservation of literary

heritage, proper use of leisure, information /documents on all subjects including local, national

and international affairs. Academic libraries are considered to be the nerve center of academic

institutions, and must support teaching, research, and other academic program.

1. Introduction

Libraries are the center of learning and

service oriented social institution, and it is

expected to perform certain functions. It

should provide Lifelong self-education,

preservation of literary heritage, proper use

of leisure, information /documents on all

subjects including local, national and

international affairs. Academic libraries are

considered to be the nerve center of

academic institutions, and must support

teaching, research, and other academic

program. The main function of Academic

library can be stated as the Conservation of

Knowledge resources, Preservation,

Dissemination, resource sharing, resource

services, self-learning.

1.1About the University Law College

The Government Law College, Bangalore

was established by the erstwhile

Government of Mysore on July 1, 1948. The

Government Law College was transferred to

Bangalore University and since then the

college is known as University Law College,

Bangalore as a constituent college by an

order dated. 19.6.1976. The University Law

College, Bangalore has been offering 5 Year

LL.B integrated program since the year

1986-87. The Master Degree Program in

Law was started in the year 1960-61 as M.L.

Degree course. After becoming part of the

Bangalore University in 1976, the P.G.

Department of Law has been offering LL.M

program me in 5 different branches. The

LL.M program in Business Law, Labor,

Capital and Law, Environment and Legal

Order, Criminal law and Constitution and

Legal order have been a great success. Our

Alumni are placed in different positions of

life like judges, leading lawyers,

academicians, statesman politicians,

bureaucrats and corporate advisors.

The Department of Law is seriously engaged

in research activities and around 25

candidates’ have been awarded Ph.D.

Degrees and presently 35 research students

are pursuing their Ph.D. Program in the

Department. The College and Department

since the year 2006 have been housed in a

newly constructed building in JnanaBharathi

campus with sufficient class rooms, seminar

halls and a spacious library with huge

collection of Law books and Journals. The

College is having well qualified and eminent

faculty with adequate non-teaching staff.

1.2 About the Library:

The ULC library established in the year

1948 along with the law college. The library

being heart of any educational institution

there was an obvious need for good library.

The library was started with a little stack of

some few books. It was housed in a small

room of the college. From the small

beginning the library has been built up &

equipped in an independent well planned

building, steadily over year. As on date the

library has about 33,870 books, about 4,230

book in book bank provided by social

welfare department, through SC/ST cell of

Bangalore University. 350 books are being

added annually. Currently the library is

subscribing to about 39 journals over year. It

is also holding a good collection of about

2,885 back volumes of journals. The

university has allotted 3, 00,000/- for books

and 1.5 lacks for journals.

1.2.3 Objectives of the ULC Library:

ULC Library is aimed to discover & bring

the best lawyers; the basic task of its

education is to promote power of the mind

acquisition of special skill and advancement

of knowledge.

To achieve these objectives the following

aims and objectives have been set by the

ULC library b adopting its service to the

syllabi & teaching methods the library

supplements the instructional work of class

room & carries forward the ideas of

education.

1.2.3 Activities of ULC Library:

The ULC library has well equipped and well

maintained library and reading rooms, books

cover wide range of subjects, of language,

social science and law besides allied and

connected areas, comprising of text books,

reference books, books in literature, rare

books, journals and digests as well as

current legal periodicals.

1.3. Library Collections:

ULC library is trying to satisfy the reading need of it users UG & PG students, Research

Scholars and faculty members. The library collection covers variety of documents such as.
