Abstract


This work was set out to study the role of primary education on the development of a child. A study of some selected government owned primary schools in Port Harcourt metropolis ,Rivers State, Nigeria. The study adopted the survey research method.  Six hypotheses were formulated and proposed respectively. Mean and standard deviation were used to test the level of significance of the relationship of the variables. Ten primary schools in Port Harcourt metropolis were selected for the study. The results showed that primary education has a significant relationship on the development of a child. Among other things, we concluded that primary education is the foundation  for success in the future  educational  achievement  of any child in Port Harcourt metropolis. The study also recommended primary education should be free of charge , government and parents should make sure every child enrolls in primary education. Secondly, government primary schools should be equipped properly so as to meet up with the private primary schools. Finally the study suggested that  further  studies should be carried out in other locations in Rivers State and also investigate the performances of primary school students based on the national policy on education.
