Abstract
Women face problems related to poverty, illiteracy, lack of skills health care etc. These are problems that cannot be tackled individually but can be better solved through group efforts. Today, the groups known as Self Help Groups have become the vehicle of change for the poor and marginalized. Since no circumstance is static, and the way forward includes ensuring a proactive involvement of women in the programme, changing social norms and perceptions and anchoring with wider movements of social change, this study is an attempt to showcase the current impact of the engagement on members of SHGs and includes recommendations for improvements in the future. Women’s participation in self help groups has obviously created tremendous impact upon the pattern and lifestyles of poor women and has empowered them at various levels as individuals, members of the family, members of the community and the society as a whole.
