Abstract
Carbon Nanotubes are one of the toughest materials on the planet. Their strength to weight ratio is phenomenally high and this lends them to be used in a variety of reinforcement applications. In this study, we look at the effects of adding SWNT to bulk metallic glasses as a reinforcement on the mechanical properties of the material. Bulk metallic glasses or amorphous metals have a relatively low glass forming temperature and just grow stronger with decrease in temperature, which lends itself pretty well for space exploration applications. However, as is currently stands we can just produce small parts like gears and cogs due to the production process requiring extremely high rates of cooling. However, with reinforcements from SWNT we can further increase their strength and durability significantly, increasing the potential applications to a wide variety of fields.
